The natural environment matters a lot to many people. Their views on issues such as recycling, population control, economic growth and renewable energy are often held strongly and emotionally. But some of these views are best described as ‘little green lies’.

Sometimes people bend the truth because they believe they are protecting others from the harm caused by environmental decay. Others do it for personal gain. But unlike ‘little white lies’, telling ‘little green lies’ is not harmless. If they become so widely accepted that they form the basis of government policies, our society can be worse off for them.

They can even end up causing environmental damage.

Pretend for a moment that we wanted to forcibly reduce the production of carbon dioxide by Australians.

There are three ways to do it.

The first option is to levy a tax on every tonne of carbon dioxide produced. This assumes that if you tax something, less of it will be produced. This is phase 1 of the Gillard/Greens scheme. Tax payers rate this the “least worst” scheme because it is simple, easily demonised and easily abolished once it becomes obvious that it is achieving no climate benefits at great cost.

An elderly woman was ordered to find a new GP because the “carbon footprint” of her two-mile round trips to the surgery where she had been treated for 30 years was too large.

Climate change madness from the WHO: Hospitals urged to reduce their carbon footprints!

Hospitals should use alternative forms of energy such as solar panels and wind turbines, install energy-efficient lightbulbs as well as buy organic food from local suppliers and make ambulances more environmentally friendly, the WHO said.
